Roby Festival

Posted by Sam on June 25, 2008 3:18 PM

I went to the Roby festival yesterday-well part of it. I had a really good time. I didn't stay for long but it was really lovely seeing members of a community get together and enjoy themselves-it always is.

Here is the story I wrote about the occasion whcih didn't get a chance to make it to the paper.

LAUGHING over cups of tea and remembering times past a group of villagers celebrated its history as part of a week long festival.
The Roby Festival was kicked off last weekend and there are events lined up until Saturday when their Capital of Culture celebrations end with a gala and steam fayre.
On Tuesday the village hosted a heritage day where members of the community came together to enjoy tea, cakes, ice creams, market stalls, the town crier and rides on Dray horses.
Boards displaying the unique history of ancient Roby proved a popular talking point amongst those gathered.
Founder and Chair of Friends of Bowring Park, Audrey Wilson, who organised the festivities said: par “We thought the Capital of Culture year was a wonderful time to celebrate the fact that Roby has a lovely, vibrant and rich history.
“We thought we should do something to bring village life back to Roby especially as it has been wiped off the road atlas with its integration into Huyton.
There was even a wishing well donated by Dave’s Handyman services.
A host of activities organised by the Friends of Bowring Park and the community from June 20-28 and include a flower festival in the park coach house from June 24-28; Roby heritage walks on June 25 and 27, and a five-a-side game in Bowring Park on June 26.
The week culminates with a Celebration Festival Gala on Saturday, June 28 in the park.
It will be attended by Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside Dame Lorna Muirhead and the Mayor and Mayoress of Knowsley.

Africa Oye

I went along to the Africa Oye over the weekend in Sefton Park. It really was a great day out despite the pouring rain.
Rich and I tried some of the authentic African food on offer and it was fantastic. Being a veggie it is hard to eat at festivals as the only option is usually chips!
It is a shame that it couldn't be repeated more than once a year but listening to the organiser on Saturday it was touch and go as to whether there was going to be one at all.
I do hope that they can get enough funding to do it again next year. I will def go!
Below is a video I made of the day. Sorry if the quality is poor -I had to write page leads for both papers as well.

Lets settle this once and for all - which is your favourite Beatle track?

Posted by Sam on June 19, 2008 3:13 PM

The Echo today gave itself the monumentous task of trying to settle once and for all just which song is Merseyside's favourite Beatle track.

It is a toughie, I have got no idea whatsoever which one I choose. The Echo printed a top 30 list which I thought was very useful but as I scanned it I became more and more confused. I confess I am not the biggest Beatle fan in the world and thus thought it would be an easy decision to make.

I was wrong.

However, this is nowhere near as hard as the task I have just been set. I have to find out the fav Beatle song of the following

Barack Obama
The Queen
Jacques Rogge
Archbishop of Canterbury
and Vladimir Putin

So if any of you can help me out, if you happen to know any of them please help me!!!

Here is the link to fill in the survey.

What do you think of the Capital of Culture year so far?

Posted by Sam on June 18, 2008 12:43 PM

I know surveys can be dull to fill out but there is currently one on the Echo website at http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/.

Essentially it is asking people what they think of the Capital of Culture year so far.

From where I ams itting it seems to be a real success but I have the advantage of knowing when and where most of the events are as they drop into my in box in the form of media calls.

But our Editor wants to know how and if it has affected you.

I have emailed all of the councillors in Liverpool, Knowsley and Sefton and a couple of them have even said that the culture year hasn't reached their communities.

Let us know

Nick is thrashed by Pat Cash.

Posted by Sam on June 16, 2008 4:55 PM

I filmed Nick Peet doing his third Great 08 challenge on Saturday. He played Pat Cash on centre court. They played first to 10 points.

Sadly Nick was beated 10-3 by the tennis star. It was brilliant to watch, I was doubled over. Bless Nick it was a good effort and well played to do it in front of a strong crowd.

Luckily for Nick the crowd got behind him and supported his efforts- not that it helped!!

Below is the video I took of the day.

Superlambanana crazy!!!

Posted by Sam on June 16, 2008 4:37 PM

Today I had the task of going out and doing a video of Liverpool's newsest residents. The diddy superlambananas.

I was stopped twice by people asking me where they could get a map for 120. I was very pleased to be able to tell and show them that the Daily Post had printed a map today.
There is also a map avaliable online which my boss painstakingly did for hours last night so use it!!
I was a little bit more creative with this video than I have been with others which took ages to edit. Im shattered now from all of the walking around and staring at the final cut machine!!

Def worth doing the tour though. I only went to a handful of them. If I had had the time I would have liked to have ventured out into the communities a bit.
